What's this fascination with combat?

This relates a little bit to yesterday's post. I was discussing 3-position rifle (national match style) shooting the other day with some folks and wondering aloud why this sport isn't more popular. The answer I got was, " It's no longer relevant to modern combat."

In 3-position shooting, a rifleman steps to the firing line and shoots from the offhand, sitting and prone positions. Most matches consist of 50 shots. The 2 things to master are "building" a stable shooting position and using the sling to stabilize the weapon while firing. When you master this sport, you become a rock-steady, lead-slinging platform. There is no "run and gun" action stuff. Just mastery of the rifle.

While I have nothing against more streetwise shooting sports, I'm curious why more people aren't interested in cultivating the art of rifle for its own sake.

Peace.
